SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A special task force says that the Minnehaha County Auditor’s Office will need more workers, more money and more space for the November election.
The group’s Kameron Nelson tells the County Commission that the expected flood of absentee ballots has to be handled.
“Just to make sure that the onslaught of returned ballots prior to the election, those six days prior, is alleviated.”
The task force agrees with the request by Auditor Bob Litz for many more election workers and the money to pay for them. Also, more counting space would be helpful.
Absentee vote-counting basically overwhelmed election workers in June because so many ballots flooded in the six days prior to election day.
Nelson says the task force is also recommending that the county commission ask Governor Kristi Noem to allow the early counting of absentee ballots – to actually start counting them before election day.
“Whether or not she and her legal counsel would choose to exercise that power would be completely up to her and her office,” But at least the county would be on record Nelson says.
Litz created the volunteer task force to help his office come up with a plan to handle the November election.
