SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Tuesday’s busy Election Day in Sioux Falls will feature just two candidates for school board. Board President Cynthia Mickelson is up for re-election against Sarah Stokke.
Mickelson is running for a second term on the board after winning her seat in 2017. She said she is proud of how the board has handled the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has posed.
“I think the school district has been a shining example of how we had to pivot and change course when we were faced with those decisions,” Mickelson said at a candidate forum earlier this week.
Stokke, a nursing instructor at the University of South Dakota, said effective communication is the biggest challenge the district faces right now.
“How do we communicate with those parents that work two jobs, and how so raise those expectations that they have to do more at home?” Stokke said. “How can we be their support system?”
High turnout is expected for the election, which was moved to the same date as the state primary due to concerns about the pandemic. When Mickelson first won her seat, turnout was just over 4%.
