SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — South Dakota’s state legislature will consider several emergency COVID-19 response bills when it convenes for veto day on Monday.
Gov. Kristi Noem said her office will put forward legislation for consideration on the final day of the 2020 legislative session.
Noem says all of the bills will take effect immediately if passed by the legislature. They are all temporary measures.
One bill would allow the state education department to change the number of required instruction hours in the 2019-20 school year to account for statewide school closures during the pandemic.
Many lawmakers will be attending the session remotely, especially those that are in groups that are particularly vulnerable to the disease. Noem said some have chosen to come to Pierre.
The legislature is expected to reconsider the state budget at a special session in June.
