PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg’s bill modifying presumptive probation died in the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 8-5 to move the bill to the 41st legislative day, effectively killing it.
The bill aimed to sentence more drug criminals to prison time instead of probation; probation is currently the default sentence for certain lower-level drug offenses.
Opponents of the bill, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argued it would be ineffective in combating South Dakota’s drug problem.
