WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds are co-sponsoring the new Republican police reform bill.
Thune says it will meet the concerns of the American people.
“They want reform and they want increased accountability. They want to make sure that we are holding our law enforcement officers to the highest standards.”
The JUSTICE Act – short for the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere Act – seeks to improve officer training, to discourage the use of certain tactics and to add new reporting requirements. It would also provide more money for police body cams.
Senator Rounds says all Americans deserve to feel safe in their own communities.
“The JUSTICE Act seeks to address bad behavior within our law enforcement community through reasonable, commonsense reforms that improve training, transparency, and accountability.”
Congressional Democrats say the Republican package doesn’t go far enough. They have their own, much more sweeping plan, introduced in the House.
