WATERTOWN, S.D. (KELO.com) — Watertown may build a long-talked-about ice arena if they can raise $15 million to pay for it.
The city announced a partnership with the Watertown Development Company to build an arena in the city’s downtown. Mayor Sarah Caron said the project will revitalize the area.
“This is part of the economic health of our community,” Caron said. “To have a facility like this tells people from outside our community that we are a community that cares.”
Caron acknowledged raising the money for the facility will be a challenge. City officials plan to start a capital campaign.
“It’s very expensive,” she said. “We’re going to need a lot of community support for it to be successful.”
The cost of the arena is only an estimate and could change depending on what is added to the facility. As it stands now the arena would feature two ice sheets, one of which would allow for year-round skating.
