SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Mayor Paul TenHaken reminds residents that clearing Sioux Falls’ streets after a snowstorm is no small thing.
“I always like to remind people we get about 3,200 lane miles a road to clear in a snow alert like this,” TenHaken told “The Greg Belfrage Show” today. “That an equivalent of Sioux falls to Anchorage, Alaska. So when you think of it that way, it’s like that’s a lot of road.”
And clearing the streets is also getting more expensive.
“The cost of these events is going up with contracted labor and salt shortages. Salt is grossly more expensive now, and so the cost is really increased,” TenHaken said.
TenHaken says the City snow removal budget for 2020–which is $8.6 million–is about a million dollars higher than it was last year.
