PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — South Dakota has its first deaths of the flu season, three reported in one week.
“This offers a great reminder to get vaccinated against influenza. We know that flu causes deaths every year,” State Epidemiologist Josh Clayton tells KELO Radio’s It’s Your Business Show with Bill Zortman.
The three victims were all over the age of 50. The cases were reported in Deul and Melette Counties.
Clayton says the deaths were caused by Influenza A, which is a bit unusual because Influenza B is usually the first to come in strong.
State health officials say an average of 46 people die every year in South Dakota as a result of flu infections.
