SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — There are no teacher pay raises in Governor Kristi Noem’s proposed budget, but House Speaker Steve Haugaard says wait awhile.
“I’ve spoken to some of the teachers around the area and assured them that that’s not the last word on saying there is zero revenues for those purposes.”
Haugaard, a Sioux Falls Republican, tells KELO’s It’s Your Business Show with Bill Zortman that he’s hoping budget money can be shuffled around to provide some kind of pay hike.
“I suspect we will find a way to get some money to the teachers, to state employees, and hopefully community support providers.”
But Haugaard says it probably won’t be as much as teachers were hoping for.
The 2020 State Legislature convenes in Pierre Tuesday, January 14.
