SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Lawmakers and capitol staff in Pierre will be sporting sneakers with their suits Wednesday in an effort to raise awareness for cancer research.
The American Cancer Society is backing the initiative as part of its Cancer Action Network.
“Estimates show there will be 4,960 new cancer cases in the state this year, and the disease will claim 1,690 South Dakotan lives in 2020,” the American Cancer Society’s Jenna Sheldon wrote in a release. “ACS CAN volunteers will call on the legislature to prioritize South Dakotan’s health and make fighting cancer a top priority in 2020.”
The ACS runs a similar campaign where basketball coaches wear sneakers on the sideline during games.
