SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Flu season in South Dakota appears to be reaching its peak, according to new data from the state Department of Health.
1,367 new confirmed cases of influenza were reported from January 26 to February 1, week five of this year’s flu season.
The number represents an increase compared to the week before, bringing the total number of cases in the state this flu season to 5,808. 37 hospitalizations and one death were reported over the week. To date, 189 people have been hospitalized and seven have died of the flue in South Dakota this season.
South Dakota’s flu season is roughly in line with the rest of the country. It’s one of 45 states where the virus is designated as “widespread” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
South Dakota flu season has peaked during the first week of February each of the last three years.
