SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Minnehaha County Commission has voted to support driver license tests in Spanish.
Commissioners say it would help in workforce development.
The County Commission joins many groups, including the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce supporting the bill in the 2020 State Legislature.
“We are one of three states that don’t offer it in any language but English,” The Chamber’s Debra Owen tells Kelo Radio’s It’s Your Business Show with Bill Zortman.
And Governor Kristi Noem, also on the Zortman Show, seems willing to hear more about the bill.
“I think they’ve found a way to work together without spending taxpayer dollars to provide some options. So that is one of the discussions with are continuing to have.”
Noem says her main concern with offering driver tests in other languages has always been the cost to taxpayers.
The Spanish test bill has many critics. House Speaker Steve Haugaard of Sioux Falls is concerned about the impact on American culture.
“You need to do that to make sure our culture remains a common, homogenous culture.”
