SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls has new election rules aimed at increasing transparency in campaign finance.
The council overturned a requirement that winning municipal candidates get rid of their campaign funds once the election ends.
In practice that meant candidates would set up a political action committee or PAC to keep funds on hand. Since PACs are less regulated than official campaign committees, that meant officials had a harder time keeping track of funds.
The new ordinance also requires candidates to report their funds twice a year in non-election years.
