PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — Gov. Kristi Noem does not want you to go to the car races Saturday at the Park Jefferson International Speedway west of Sioux City.
She made the comment during her daily coronavirus briefing this afternoon.
Noem says she’s not going to stop the races in Union County but that it is not a good idea to go during the coronavirus outbreak.
Noem says it violates many CDC recommendations, including not going to events of over ten or more people.
The Union County Commission also said they did not have the legal authority to stop the sprint car and mods racing near Jefferson.
Race organizers posted on the track’s website yesterday that the open-wheel races would be limited to 32 cars in each class, no more than ten people in a pit area, and that people at risk of getting the coronavirus should stay home. They said on their Twitter feed yesterday that all 700 tickets were sold–a sell out because of social distancing.
The track is a 3/8th mile semi-banked dirt track. The track normally can hold 4,000 spectators. The track’s website says the 32 IMCA mods slots are filled while five of the 32 410 sprint car slots are still available.
