SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — U.S. Senator John Thune said he was concerned about the state of the live cattle market when hearing from representatives of the livestock industry in Washington Wednesday.
Thune and his colleagues on the Senate Agriculture Committee were hearing from industry leaders as the Senate considers whether to re-authorize the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act.
Top of mind at the hearing was a fire at a Tyson processing plant on August 9. The fire brought down the demand for live cattle and caused prices to sink.
“The fact that losing just one beef plant in the United States created so much volatility in the cattle marketplace,” Thune said, “is deeply concerning,”
