SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Airbnb has activated its Open Homes Program to help displaced residents and relief workers deployed to the regions impacted by recent tornadoes and flooding in South Dakota.
The Open Homes Program recruits hosts who are willing and able to provide free housing to displaced residents and disaster relief workers in the activation area.
Airbnb Hosts in South Dakota and in surrounding states can opt to list their homes for $0 and offer accommodations free of charge to those in need by visiting www.airbnb.com/sdfloods19.
The goal of the Open Homes Program is to ensure those able to open their homes, as well as anyone who is affected and in need of temporary accommodation, knows this option is available to them.
The Open Homes Program for South Dakota and surrounding states is available through October 4, 2019.
Official statement from Kellie Bentz, Airbnb’s Head of Global Disaster Response and Relief:
“Airbnb’s Open Homes Program has been activated to assist residents displaced by and relief workers deployed to respond to severe weather impact in South Dakota. Through the program, those in need of temporary accommodations can connect with Open Homes hosts in the area free of charge. The program extends through October 4 and is available to those in need in South Dakota and surrounding states.”
Hosts who are unable to open up their homes, but still want to help, can donate to Airbnb’s Open Homes Fund to help fund stays for people in times of need. Hosts can choose to donate a portion of their Airbnb earnings, and 100% of contributions go to nonprofits like MercyCorps who help evacuees, relief workers and others in need find temporary housing.
