BURNSVILLE, Minn. (Augie PR) – Augustana sophomore Luis Guarita was the homecoming hero and has since been rewarded as the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week. The kicker from Sau Paulo, Brazil, connected on the game-winning field goal in overtime to top St. Cloud State 16-13 on Saturday.
Guarita made all three field goal attempts in the Viking Days game, and when mixed with an extra point, accounted for 10 of the Vikings’ 16 points. He hit two field goals from 27 yards and the game-winner was from 35 yards.
The game-winning field goal was the first in overtime for Augustana since the 2008 season.
Guarita is now 12-of-13 for the season on field goals and leads the NSIC in field goal percentage for kickers who attempt at least a field goal per game. His 92.3 field-goal percentage ranks him fourth in the nation while his average of two field goals per game ranks him fifth in NCAA Division II.
