RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO.com) — Teenage Activist Greta Thunberg of Sweden brought her call to action on climate change to South Dakota on Monday.
“This is an actual crisis and people are being threatened,” Thunberg said. “People are being killed by it today. It’s not just something we can look away from anymore.”
Thunberg was alongside tribal members and tribal leaders taking part in a panel in Rapid City about environmental and indigenous issues. She was invited by Tokata Iron Eyes, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and fellow activist.
“I don’t think people are evil. I just think people are very unaware of the urgency of this crisis,” Thunberg said. “I think the first step is to try to inform people of what is actually going on.”
Iron Eyes and others continue to protest the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline less than a mile from the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
