HURON, S.D. (KELO.com) — A man suspected of shoplifting in Huron attempted to elude authorities at a high rate of speed Tuesday evening.
According to Huron Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a male subject who had just shoplifted from a local store. The subject failed to stop and attempted to flee at high speeds.
At one point, the subject drove through a yard, running over a tree while the homeowner was in the yard.
Officers pursued the subject eastbound on 33rd St SE and attempted to spike the subject’s vehicle at 21st and Sherman Ave. The subject left the roadway to avoid the spike strip and then continued eastbound.
Van Diepen says due to the offenses committed and the speeds and manner of driving by the subject the pursuit was terminated by the Huron Police Department.
A short time later a Beadle County Deputy engaged in a pursuit with the same vehicle.
Huron police officers successfully deployed a spike strip in an attempt to slow the suspect down prior to entering the City of Huron.
The subject eventually lost control of his vehicle going off the roadway and coming to a stop in the south ditch of Highway 14.
The subject was transported to HRMC for self-inflicted injuries.
Van Diepen says charges may be pending with the Beadle County States Attorney’s Office.
