SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Whether Spanish-speaking South Dakotans should be able to take the driver’s test in their native language will likely be a discussion point for the legislature in January.
Some opponents of the idea say people should learn English first. State Chamber of Commerce and Industry president David Owen says that’s misguided.
“They will learn English faster working in an English-speaking experience than sitting at home in a non-English environment waiting to go to work someplace,” Owen said.
As of last December, only six states offer written exams exclusively in English: Alaska, Arizona, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
