PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — The 2020 session of the South Dakota legislature will again have bills dealing with controlled substances and treatment options.
The “Offenses Regarding Controlled Substances” interim committee wrapped up its study last week.
Senator Craig Kennedy of Yankton again pushed for a change in state law over the ingestion of drugs.
Currently, ingestion is a felony. Kennedy and some other legislators would like to see it downgraded to a misdemeanor.
Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg opposed that change.
Committee Chairman, Representative Steven Haugaard says they have only a general idea of the changes and costs.
The committee asked the Departments of Social Services and Corrections to come up with more specific costs of the proposed drug treatment options.
