SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — In what could be a growing trend, The Sioux Falls Regional Landfill for the first time, is accepting old wind turbine blades.
City Public Works Director Mark Cotter says the trashed blades started coming about three weeks ago.
“There’s one blade per load and we took about 101 loads in. These are generally from the Spirit Lake, Iowa and Albert Lea, Minnesota area.”
The landfill is now getting so many blades, that Cotter says they have had to change the rules. Haulers have been bringing the big blades in three pieces. Cotter says they now need to be cut up into more, smaller pieces before the landfill will accept them.
Cotter expects landfills will be seeing more and more trashed blades as wind farms start switching out their old equipment.
