SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken strongly opposes the Triple Check the Charter petition drive to change the way city government works.
One proposed city charter change would essentially remove the mayor from city council.
“To put that responsibility of the strategic direction of the city into the hands of eight part-time city councilors is, I think, a very dangerous thing to do,” says TenHaken in a video on his Facebook page.
TenHaken says city government is working just fine, the budget is balanced, and the city is growing.
” Essentially, it ain’t broke right now.”
The Triple Check The Charter group has accused city officials have trying to change the rules in the middle of the game. The City Attorney has ruled that stricter state statues must apply for the petition drive, including ten percent of registered voters, instead of five percent, to get the charter changes on the ballot.
