WATERTOWN, S.D. (KELO.com) — Lake Kampeska water levels have risen 13 inches since last Thursday after heavy rains in excess of three inches caused flooding throughout northeastern South Dakota.
The lake is expected to rise another two inches this week before it begins to recede. That’s the assessment of Roger Foote who is the project director for the Upper Big Sioux River Project. Foote, who checks the water levels on both Lakes Kampeska and Pelican, said that prediction is barring any additional rain.
Following calm winds and warm temps, Foote is cautioning the public to be aware of the changing lake conditions and to be watchful of algae blooms.
Foote said they’re issuing an algae alert for Lake Kampeska this week. In the meantime, he encourages boaters to adhere to the 50-yard no-wake zone on the lake until lake levels recede. Lake Poinsett also has a no-wake zone in effect.
