SIOUX FALLS, SD, (KELO.com)–The State of South Dakota is at war with meth.
In a recent study by The 2018 Statewide Drug Statistics, the state saw over 3,600 arrests for methamphetamine in 2018. These arrests resulted in more than 101 pounds of confiscated meth.
The Sioux Falls Meth Force saw about 1,300 of those arrests.
Tim Bormann, chief of staff with the Attorney General’s Office, says, “A 101 pounds of meth is still a lot of meth.”
He says that one gram of meth sells for about $80 for street value and about 150 milligrams of meth could is enough to cause a person to overdose.
“Like all drugs, it’s a sliding scale and affects everyone differently. For that, there is no hard and fast science,” Bormann says.
Bormann says that meth is just one of many drugs law enforcement has to deal with. All drugs are being abused in South Dakota.
He says, “There is simply a lot of drugs. You are finding heroin amounts in all numbers of counties. Fentanyl is just horrendous; it can scare a person.”
Bormann says that prescription drugs are also being abused.
“All of these drugs have a street value. If they are out there, there is a market,” he says.
Bormann says that it’s a never-ending battle with drugs in the state.
Once a year in South Dakota, all the drugs confiscated by the arrests that are no longer held as evidence, are taken to one of three destruction facilities located in Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls.
