SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Swaths of South Dakota have been hit by heavy rains today.
The National Weather Service reports Huron set a new record for rainfall today.
- Huron, South Dakota has had 3.26 in. of rain through 1:28 PM CDT. That breaks the daily record of 2.88 inches set in 1981. It is also the 2nd most daily rainfall for the month of August. The record is 4.11 in. set on August 2, 1956.
The NWS also reported that an area south of Chamberlain received 2.5 inches of rain in a half hour this morning.
The National Park Service reports flooding on Sage Creek in the Badlands National Park.
Northeast South Dakota has also seen considerable rain.
The NWS issued Flood Warnings for Day, Roberts and northeastern Codington Counties this morning when heavy rain fell across the area.
Hecla reported 4.5 inches of rain. Waubay saw five inches.
Ryan Vipond, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, says there were reports of roads underwater with these very heavy rainfall amounts.
The heavy rain was expected to exit the area by mid-afternoon.
The NWS predicts the following for the Sioux Falls area:
- On-going showers and storms are slowly making their way across southeastern SD, getting less intense with time. Development is possible through 4 PM, but as they get into MN and IA they will become much weaker.
