<strong>
I’ve got my South Dakota Farmers Union colors
on today. If you don’t know It’s Green—and I wear it proudly – helping represent
the 17,000 members across South Dakota.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
On the 2
<sup>
nd
</sup>
Tuesday each month
10-11—South Dakota Farmers Union with the help of my SDFU Producer – Miller’s
Kecia Beranek – we put together information on this organization.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Last month President Doug Sombke was in
studio—today he’s at a 10
<sup>
th
</sup>
Anniversary observance for Glacial
Lakes Energy in Mina.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Our discussion with Doug will include the
importance of ethanol — why we have to push and use ourselves this fuel –E-30
is Doug’s choice if we are to work our way out of the challenges we face. Also
in the interview you’ll hear me ask about tariff’s, generational transition for
those in agriculture, and what we should be asking our elected officials at
Fair’s, Farm Shows and even the September fly-in to Washington DC.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Hank Wonnenberg—Bankwest has made this fly-in
– as I have as well — and we’ll talk about the importance — particularly in
2018.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Don’t be confused by the name—but Matt Perdue
Government Relations Representative for the National Farmers Union – talks to
us from DC about a Friday deadline for rulemaking to amend product of USA
Labeling Standards.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Here is the rub:
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
The
Food Safety and Inspection Service’s (FSIS) current labeling policy standards
allows meat to be labeled “Product of U.S.A.” if the product is “processed in
the U.S.” Due to a lack of clarity in the definition of “processing,” the
current standard allows imported meat, regardless of its origin, to be labeled
“Product of U.S.A.” if it passes through a United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) inspected plant.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
In June the Organization for Competitive
Markets and American Grassfed Association submitted a petition for a rulemaking
to amend “Product of USA” labeling. The proposed amendment to the standard
would effectively eliminate opportunities for foreign companies to label
imported meat “Product of USA”.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Comments on the petition are being accepted
thru Friday-August 17
<sup>
th
</sup>
. The comment submissions can be found at:

</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
In the second half of our show—we’ll talk
about the SDFU safety trailer— that Rocky Forman has been taken to camps and
other events.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Then a visit with Selby Area’s young star—Justin
Goetz.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
He’s been going to Farmers Union Camp for 6
of his 17 years and with his family have 300-50 head cattle on their ranch.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
He was first elected one of the 6 teens for
the South Dakota Farmers Union Junior Advisory Council and then was elected one
of six to the National Farmers Union Youth Council.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
It will allow him to travel the Washington DC
National Fly in September 11-14 and the Seattle National Convention March 3-5.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Justin is #1 in his class with a 4.0. He has
scholarship offers to in state schools—but wants to double major in political
science and economics at HARVARD. Then go to law school.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
His take on young people and agriculture is
refreshing—and encouraging.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
10:45 we’ll visit with Jason Wells about
scholarship information for the State Fair. We’ll talk about the scholarships
offered including a post-secondary and Insuring a Brighter Tomorrow
Scholarship(s) as well.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
The recipients are chosen from among a large
pool of applicants. They are scored based on a combination of academic record,
activities and awards, financial need and an essay relating how they will “Insure
a Brighter Tomorrow” in South Dakota.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Our last stop is Huron—Candi Briley—South Dakota
State Fair—now just days away. She’ll have information on ways to save at the
Fair—the special events—and what exactly is new at the Fair.
</strong>
</p>
<p>
<strong>
Karla and Rocky will help us talk about the
SDFU celebration of community heroes, family farmers and ranchers and educate
consumers with current challenges facing our State’s #1 industry of agriculture
during the 2018 Farmers Union Day at the Fair. Plus we’ll chew on the Ag Meal –
and what a $12 meal what financially it actually would be to farmers if they were paid for the ingredients.
</strong>
