Sep 16 (Field Level Media) – The New York Yankees returned right-hander Clarke Schmidt from his rehab assignment on Wednesday, giving him a chance to make his first MLB appearance since July 3, 2025.
Schmidt has been on the 60-day injured list all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery 14 months ago. It was the second such procedure for Schmidt, 30.
At the time of his injury, Schmidt was 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts in 2025.
With the Yankees’ rotation seemingly set approaching the postseason, Schmidt is likely to pitch out of the bullpen.
In parts of six seasons, Schmidt has appeared in 97 games (67 starts) for New York. He has a 23-24 record with two saves and a 3.82 ERA over 393 1/3 career innings.
In five rehab assignments between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Somerset, Schmidt gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees designated infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment.
Cabrera, 27, also has spent his entire career with the Yankees, who signed him as an international free agent in July 2015. Since 2022, he has appeared in 304 games, hitting .232 with 20 homers and 95 RBIs.
This season, he played in just three games with the Yankees, going hitless in nine at-bats. He spent the bulk of the season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .288 with 19 home runs and 69 RBIs in 122 outings.
