SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Several shake-ups in the South Dakota State Penitentiary have some concerned about possible nepotism.
The scrutiny comes after State Penitentiary Warden Joe Roemmich and Major Cody Hanson were terminated last week.
There are connections in the corrections system as former state Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko began serving as an external commission advisor for the Hughes County Jail.
The facility is administered by her husband, Gerald Wasko.
The Department of Corrections responded to the questions saying that any hiring events involving a marital or familial connection must be reviewed and approved by the Secretary of Corrections first.
