Minnehaha County States Attorney Daniel Haggar
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The good side, and the bad side of juvenile crime stats. Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Daniel Haggar presented both to County Commissioners Tuesday morning. He told commissioners that the number of felony charges against juveniles ballooned last year, “There’s more severity in the types of cases. In 2024, 31% (of juvenile crimes) were felonies. In 2025, it was at 60%. Firearms charges are also skyrocketing. In 2024, juvenile firearm charges, there were 44. In 2025 that number tripled to 147.”
The number of felony repeat offenses among adults also turned sharply higher last year, going from 45% of all felonies in 2024 up to 64% of all felonies in 2025. On the positive side, Haggar said diversion programs for juveniles and adults are showing good success rates.
