SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A Sioux Falls man is behind bars today after an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon. The Police Violent Crimes Unit had been looking for 36-year old Richard Olson of Sioux Falls for the past week on a federal weapons violation. When officers blocked him at a gas station near Russell Street and North Minnesota Avenue, Olson produced a gun. Police Chief Jon Thum says two officers fired on Olson, but missed, “We don’t seek or desire officer-involved shootings. We show great restraint and use different things, tools that are available, but ultimately there are people who need to be arrested in our community and society because of the choices they’ve made.”
Olson tried to flee on foot, but officers released a K9, which confronted and subdued him. He’s being held on the federal charges in the Minnehaha County jail. The state division of crimination investigation will review the shooting incident.
