SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Big changes are coming in the school nutrition program as the Trump Administration pushes for more protein and healthier meals. Sioux Falls School District Child Nutrition Coordinator Gay Anderson says she’s waiting for final word on what that includes, but she’s already certain it will add to the cost of the nutrition program. “They’re talking we’ve got to get more proteins in breakfast – that’s something we’ve advocated for years, because protein isn’t part of breakfast necessarily. We’re looking at less sugar and increased proteins, maybe some hot breakfast options, but we’re not set up in our elementary schools for that type of setting.” The district would have to buy more equipment in order to comply with the new changes, at a cost of up to $400-thousand.
School officials across South Dakota are also waiting to see the outcome of a bill that would cover the cost of reduced price school meals. It was passed by the legislature and is awaiting Governor Rhoden’s signature.
