SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Plans to create a Tax Incentive Finance District to support construction of a new Smithfield Foods plant are moving forward. The Sioux Falls City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve first reading of the proposal. In contrast to Monday night’s town hall meeting in Crooks where residents strongly opposed the project, most of the comments during the City Council meeting were positive. Council member Miranda Boese says email and voice mail messages have been overwhelmingly positive since officials unveiled plans to move Smithfield from its current location at The Falls to the Foundation Park industrial development park on the city’s northwest side. The TIF would defer about four and a half million dollars in tax revenue in each of the next 20 years to pay for a wastewater treatment plant at the new facility. A final decision on the TIF is set for next week. Council members will also consider the conditional use permit for the project at that time.
