PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Soda purchases using SNAP Food Stamp benefits may be outlawed under a bill headed to Governor Larry Rhoden’s desk. Senator Sydney Davis of Burbank says SNAP should be used for food – not pop. “It’s about responsible stewardship of our taxpayer dollars and our taxpayer-funded nutrition programs. If we call it a nutrition program, it should be focused on nutrition.”
Senator Tamara Grove of Lower Brule is concerned administering the change is too much work. “Because what’s going to happen is the mom and pop, there’s a half an hour that way and a half an hour that way, are going to say, you know what, this is far more work than I want to do. And then they’re going to stop offering EBT.” The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
