SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Police are warning the public about the illegal use of unlicensed recreational vehicles on city streets. That follows an accident between an ATV being operated by two 11-year-olds, and a car at an intersection in the southwestern part of the city Monday evening. The 11-year olds suffered some broken bones, but thankfully escaped without any life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Travis Olson says the ATV wasn’t legal for city streets.
Sgt. Olson says all vehicles on public roadways must be licensed, and must have required safety equipment such as headlights, tail lights and mirrors. The ATV involved in Monday’s crash had a flashlight attached to the front of the vehicle instead of headlights. He says he was thankful he didn’t have to report any fatalities in the accident, because the situation could easily have led to that. The parents that own the ATV were cited for allowing an unlicensed person to operate the vehicle on public streets.
