SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — It was an all out community-wide effort to save a boy’s life, and police are grateful. With dangerously cold weather moving into the region Thursday, Sioux Falls police knew the importance of quickly finding 10-year old Joel Taken Alive, who ran away from home at about 1am Thursday morning. Lt. Nick Butler of the police department expressed deep gratitude for all the community members and public safety and law enforcement agencies that came together to search for the young boy.
Part of that help included community members steering clear of the search area when it made a difference – heeding the police department’s call to stay out of the search area while they used trained dogs to locate Joel. Those dogs came from the Omaha Police Department, which helped in the search. Police were also aided in the search by the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department, Highway Patrol officers from North and South Dakota and a number of emergency response agencies throughout the region. The ten year old returned home safely at about 11 pm Thursday night.
