Fort Pierre, SD (KELO.com) — The risks of our extended warm, dry weather are being felt on the prairie. The Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department spend over five hours battling a fire this week. The area received plenty of rain during the growing season, but the recent dry and windy weather is creating problems. With the harvest and hunting season gearing up, Fire Chief John Luce is urging caution. There have already been numerous fires started by harvesting equipment. Luce is also asking hunters to avoid driving through areas of dry grass, which could easily spark a blaze.
