SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Nearly half of all South Dakota Penitentiary Inmates will return to prison after violating parole by committing another offense. That’s one of the reasons residents of several communities resisted the idea of becoming the location for a new men’s prison. City officials appear resigned to the idea of Sioux Falls being the location of the new prison, including Police Chief Jon Thum, who says the city has hosted a prison for over a century and proven it is able to deal with the associated problems. He says land along Benson Road east of I-229 provides a good location, but state officials need to recognize there will be a need to provide support for the city. The legislature gets the final say on whether a new prison will be built – and where. That will happen during a special legislative session next month.
