SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls area Law Enforcement leaders say assaults against officers are on the rise – and they’re concerned. Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead appeared at a joint news conference with Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum Friday morning. The Sheriff pointed to statistics showing assaults on workers at the local Juvenile Detention Center have increased sharply, along with assaults on deputies at the County jail. He noted that most of the adults involved in the jail assaults also had history of spending time in the juvenile center.
Chief Thum referenced three recent examples of assaults on officers. The first was an armed standoff in Brandon that left a man dead. The second, an incident last weekend in which a state patrol trooper was fired upon by a machine gun. The third incident involved juveniles. He couldn’t give details on that incident, but says it’s all part of a disturbing trend that is also playing out in assaults and confrontations with authority figures at school and other places. Thum and Milstead say mentoring and good parenting are needed to turn things around.
