PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — The prison funding bill for South Dakota’s proposed new men’s facility is now dead in the water. House Bill 10-25 was sent to the floor again yesterday on a reconsideration vote. It was unsuccessful after the state house voted in a 35-35 tie. The bill was expected to pass by one vote, however Representative Degroot of Brookings flipped his original vote of no to yes. The bill would have appropriated money to begin construction on the proposed men’s penitentiary site in Lincoln County. The measure was significantly gutted in committee and didn’t have enough appeal for a majority vote. The final result comes after Governor Rhoden was publicly insisting that the prison funding bill needed to be approved over the past few weeks.
