PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Plans to build a new men’s penitentiary between Harrisburg and Canton advanced in Pierre Wednesday, without all of the money needed to pay for it. Area residents turned out to testify against the location as a state House committee debated the proposed 825-million dollar facility. Representative Tim Reisch of Howard, also a former Corrections Secretary, urged passage of the proposal and locking in the price, while acknowledging any site selection for a prison is troublesome.
Canton Representative Karla Lems opposes the plan, and recommended a pause in the process.
The committee voted to send the proposal to the House Appropriations Committee with no recommendation. That keeps the bill alive and the debate unresolved.
