SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — New technology that could make criminals uneasy coming through Sioux Falls. Police Chief Jon Thum unveiled the “Real Time Information Center” to City Councilors this week. The city’s network of cameras will expand with the addition of License Plate readers that have already helped solve some crimes in the city. Similar technology also led to the recent arrest of a second suspect in a deadly shooting earlier this year.
The system also helped bring about the arrest of a suspect in two recent rape cases, and nabbed a bank robber within 30 minutes of his crime by tracking him to a local hotel. In addition, Chief Thum says the Information Center helps protect the city by alerting officers when suspects come rolling into town.
For those who have privacy concerns, Chief Thum says the system does not include facial recognition or biometric capabilities.
