SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The growing dispute over the impact of the effort to remove the sales tax on food. That’s at the heart of the debate over Initiated Measure 28 on South Dakota’s ballot. At a League of Women Voters Forum, Nathan Sanderson, the Executive Director of the State Retailers Association, argued the impact is much deeper than advertised.
Rick Weiland organized the petition drive that put IM-28 on the ballot. He says state officials disagree with that interpretation, and that local governments won’t be affected by the repeal.
South Dakota is one of seven states that taxes grocery purchases.
