VERMILLION, SD (KELO.com) — He started off pursuing a major in engineering. Now, he’s on his way to help solve the problem of the nursing shortage in rural America. Dalten Bremer of Ocheydan, Iowa says he feels called to rural areas like his hometown.
Bremer will be a senior at USD this fall and was recently chosen as an Avera Sponsorship recipient. He’ll receive 15-thousand dollars for his commitment to three years of employment with Avera after graduation. Bremer just completed a summer work experience at Avera’s regional health center in Freeman. It’s part of a federal program aimed at filling the gap.
Bremer says the experience at the Freeman Health Center was invaluable.
He believes it will give him an edge in the job hunt at graduation time. School and state officials are hoping students will stay in South Dakota for their careers. Bremer transferred to USD for the nursing program, but has his sites set on going back home.
