GETTYSBURG, SD (KELO.com) — The Gettysburg School District is taking charge of a growing problem in the classroom. There are new phone rules for kids in the Gettysburg District. When students return to school next month, they’ll be device-free for the entire day. Grades six through 12 will need to store their phones and smart devices in a magnetic, locked pouch. The pouches can only be opened with an unlocking base mounted to the walls at the front and back entrance of the building. Superintendent Amber Mikkelsen says the decision to make Gettysburg a device-free school started about a year ago.
With the support of the Gettysburg School Board, Mikkelsen says the district consulted with some schools that have already gone device-free. She says the response to the decision has been overwhelmingly positive.
