NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD (KELO.com) — Flood waters have peaked…but they’re slow to recede. That seems to be the biggest problem in the Sioux City area as anxious residents are eagerly waiting to return to their homes to check on damage. For some, it’s a total loss. Floods destroyed a number of homes around McCook Lake by North Sioux City. Several were swept off their foundations, forcing people to evacuate. Some homeowners say it all happened so fast that there was no time to react.
Interstate 29 was expected to be re-opened to traffic late Monday, but it remains closed Tuesday morning. North and South bound traffic is closed between Exit 2 in North Sioux City and Exit 26 at Vermillion. No through traffic is possible. For the latest road closing information go to: sd511.org
Now, the flood concerns will move to the Yankton area, which is dealing with high waters and heavy current from the James River. Governor Kristi Noem is expected to hold a news briefing in Yankton late this afternoon.
