SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — California politics are making an already tough time for the pork industry even worse. Pork producers are losing between 20 and 40-dollars per head at the market. Now, a California ballot initiative – Prop 12 – is requiring producers to provide more pen space for each animal. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says it makes the industry that much tougher.
Pork producers are already losing money under current market conditions. Now, they have to consider extra expenses to come into compliance with California’s Prop 12. That ballot measure requires producers wanting to sell in California to provide more pen space for their animals. Muller says it’s making for some tough decisions.
Today it’s Prop 12 – but what about the future? Muller says there’s cause for concern.
Prop 12 was approved by California voters in 2018, but challenged in court. The Supreme Court rejected a challenge to Prop 12 earlier this year, so now it’s taking effect.
