SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A Sioux Falls resident receives extensive burns while trying to save his dog during a house fire last night around 10:46.
According to Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, flames were coming from the detached garage of the home at 823 West 22nd Avenue and then extended into the house.
Neighbors reported that one person went back into the home to get their dog. The resident was able to exit the home but the dog remained inside.
With the arrival of additional Sioux Falls Fire Rescue trucks and crews, entry was made into the home to begin extinguishment. While conducting the initial search inside, the dog was rescued and brought out safely to Sioux Falls Animal Control personnel.
The resident that was able to exit the home received extensive burns to the body. The patient was taken to the hospital for further emergency medical care. There were no injuries to emergency personnel.
The fire was brought under control after approximately 20 minutes.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: At 10:46 p.m. on Monday evening, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was dispatched to a report of a fire at 823 W. 22nd Avenue. Initial reports were that visible flames were coming from the home.
The first arriving crew reported smoke and flames coming from the detached garage of the home. After initial size up, it was determined that the fire had extended into the house. Neighbors reported that one person went back into the home to get their dog. The resident was able to exit the home but the dog remained inside.
With the arrival of additional Sioux Falls Fire Rescue trucks and crews, entry was made into the home to begin extinguishment. While conducting the initial search inside, the dog was rescued and brought out safely to Sioux Falls Animal Control personnel. The fire was brought under control after approximately 20 minutes. Crews remained on scene for another three hours to complete overhaul and ventilation operations, ensuring all hot spots had been extinguished.
The resident that was able to exit the home received extensive burns to the body. PCLS ambulance transported the patient to the hospital for further emergency medical care. There were no injuries to emergency personnel.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with six fire trucks, two support vehicles, and 23 firefighters. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by Metro Communications, Sioux Falls Police Department, PCLS ambulance, Xcel Energy, and Mid-American Energy.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and further investigation is ongoing.
