SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Snow and freezing rain have arrived as another major winter storm is set to impact the KELO listening area.
Several weather advisories have been issued which include Winter Storm and Ice Storm Warnings.
While mixed precipitation began falling earlier this morning, snow has begun to fall and will continue through late Tuesday night.
Travel impacts from the storm system are already being felt across the region.
SD511.org shows that several roads in the area are already snow and ice covered with visibilites of less than a quarter mile, including Interstate 90 west of Sioux Falls.
Meanwhile, freezing rain continues to fall in parts of northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa with ice accumulation totals of a quarter inch or more which will cause slick roadways and possibly power outages as powerlines become glazed with ice.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says that travel conditions are expected to deteriorate.
Travel will become hazardous, if not impossible, later this evening in Tuesday in many areas.
While staying home would be your safest option, if you must travel, ensure you have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle.
Monitor your local forecast, stay winter weather aware, and check back in with KELO.com for more updates to the first winter storm of 2023.
