SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — As we enter day three of the ongoing winter storm, road closures and No Travel advisories remain in effect for a majority of South Dakota.
While Interstate 90 has been reopened from Rapid City to the Wyoming border, the South Dakota Department of Transportation says that it’ll remain closed between Chamberlain and Wall.
That closure will likely be expanded to Mitchell as the combination of newly developing snow and sustained winds will make I-90 impassable during the evening and overnight hours.
Additionally, they say that with deteriorating conditions in northern South Dakota, they plan on closing I-29 from Watertown to the North Dakota border later this afternoon.
Accumulating snow and strong winds will continue to make secondary highways impassable over an extended period of time with many state highways posting No Travel Advised.
Many vehicles have become stuck and stranded on these highways in an attempt to avoid Interstate closures.
These vehicles will create hazards for snowplow operators and may delay getting sections of highways cleared.
If you plan on traveling over the next couple of days, make sure to double-check sd511.org before departing.
